Fused & Dichroic Glass JewelryIn its most basic sense Glass fusion is a process where pieces of glass are joined together by using the heat of a kiln to soften and merge the glass segments together. Great skill and understanding of the glass is needed to understand the exact temperatures at which the various types of glass will become soft but not molten, to control the flow and fusion of the glass itself. The mastery of these techniques though means endless possibilities, when combining compatible glass of different colour texture and size.
Many of the pieces featured here also integrate a very specialized type of glass known as Dichroic. Originally produced for the aerospace industry, dichroic refers to a glass with a specialized coating applied, giving it a unique reflective property. The various colours will shift and bend depending upon the angle you view them from, adding to the depth and beauty of each finished piece. The complexity of the process required in making dichroic glasses makes it one of the most expensive glasses made today.
